Grant Funding Opportunity in Pediatric Oncology
Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Hope Street Kids and Rally For Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, national non-profit organizations dedicated to the elimination of childhood cancer through innovative research in pediatric oncology, invite letters of intent for funding of projects in the following areas:
Basic, Translational, Clinical, and Applied Research Projects and Fellowships
LETTER OF INTENT DEADLINE
January 10, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. ET
APPLICATION DEADLINE (for those invited to apply based on the Letter of Intent)
March 1, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. ET

On or before June 1, 2011
RESEARCH PROJECT PRIORITY AREAS
- Post-doctoral Fellowships for pediatric cancer research.
- Projects that focus on solid tumors and underserved areas of tumor types, such as retinoblastoma, Wilms' tumor, etc.
- Grants for junior faculty development in pediatric cancer research at the instructor or assistant professor level. In particular, precedence will be given to fostering promising fellow's transition to faculty positions and candidates in the early stages of their independent career with an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD.
- Creative or innovative approaches to pediatric cancer research, which could potentially become advanced studies or clinical trials with initial seed support.
- Projects with translational components (e.g. clinical studies, or likely to lead to a clinical trial in the near future).
Secondary Priorities Include:
- Survivorship studies.
- Personalized, alternative, or integrative research proposals are acceptable.
- Clinical Research Nurses.
- Palliative and Pain Management or procedural pain management associated with cancer and treatment.
POTENTIAL AWARD RANGE
$20,000 - $40,000 per year for up to two years. (Second year award is contingent upon a favorable progress report and available funds in year two.)
LETTER OF INTENT SUBMISSION PROCESS
Investigators who wish to submit a Letter of Intent describing a project that falls within with the research project priority areas must complete the online LOI instructions and include the following:
Letters of Intent (limited to 2 pages) must describe the proposed pediatric cancer research project and describe the Specific Aims, Rationale and Approach, Innovation and Potential for Translational Application and future Patient Benefit. Relevant references must be attached and are limited to 1 page.
Letters of Intent must be accompanied by the following: scientific abstract, limited to a half page, providing a clear, concise overview of the proposed cancer research project; the CV and publication history of the Applicant; and a Letter of Commitment from the Applicant's department head, dean, or other senior member of the institution.
Only one Letter of Intent per investigator will be accepted. A limited number of applicants whose Letters of Intent are deemed most meritorious will be invited to submit full research proposals and compete for the available grants. Deadline for full proposal March 1, 2011.
EVALUATION
Grants are evaluated by a multidisciplinary independent Scientific Advisory Council according to the NIH recognized peer-review process. The Council consists of senior scientists who are respected for their own accomplishments in cancer research and as leaders in their respective fields.
