OUR MISSION:
The mission of Hope Street Kids is to eliminate childhood cancer through pioneering research, advocacy and education.
Event Guidelines
Hope Street Kids is a non-profit organization registered under as D/B/A under the umbrella of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The Prevent Cancer Foundation is recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) public charity and meets all of the standards of the National Charities Information Bureau. HSK follows all of the IRS laws for charitable giving, acknowledgments and tracking of fund-raising events. Guidelines listed below are to help you in the planning of your fund-raising event or activity to benefit Hope Street Kids.
If you or your organization wishes to conduct an event or promotion involving the use of the name Hope Street Kids for fund-raising and/or publicity purposes, you must submit in writing your proposal for approval by the Foundation.
Please allow four weeks for the review process.
- Events should complement the mission and the image of Hope Street Kids. Companies that conflict with the HSK mission and values may not be sponsors. We discourage sponsorship via tobacco, firearms companies or other companies that are not family-friendly.
- HSK must approve, in advance, all copy for invitations, advertisements, press releases, posters or other promotional information related to your project. Please do not make public announcements or promote the event until you receive approval from our office.
- We require that you complete our event proposal form and submit it via email, fax or by mail to our Alexandria, VA, office. Please be sure to include an estimate of expenses and revenues for your event, as well as the size of the contribution you intend to donate to HSK. The Council of Better Business Bureau states that, "reasonable use of funds requires that at least 50 percent of total income from all sources be spent on programs and activities directly related to the organization's purposes. HSK will not approve an event in which fund-raising costs exceed 50 percent of the total income. HSK strives to maintain fund-raising costs below 15% of the total income.
- Events must comply with all federal, state and local laws governing charitable fundraising, gift reporting and special events. The IRS requires that all tickets, invitations or entry forms state which portion of the contribution is tax-deductible. If a donor receives a product or service in exchange for their donation, subtract the value (whether or not it is donated) of the product or service from the contribution. The remaining amount is tax-deductible. If your donors send their contributions directly to HSK, you must inform our office of the value of any goods or services the donor received in return for the contribution.
- Please notify HSK if you plan to contact businesses, individuals or organizations for sponsorship or underwriting proposals. If you plan to solicit contributions, sponsorship or in-kind gifts from local businesses, we request that the list of potential business sponsors be submitted to our office before being solicited. Please keep in mind that many individuals and businesses already support HSK and may not wish to make additional donations.
What HSK Can Do to Help You
- offer advice and expertise on event planning
- provide and approve usage of our logo and tagline
- assist in promoting the event on our Web site and in our press releases
- provide a written tax receipt to donors who make their checks payable to Hope Street Kids
- possibly provide one on-site staff or volunteer support at your event (Please be sure to request this in advance do to scheduling concerns and a small staff. Please understand that there are no guarantees that we will be able to accommodate your request.)
- possibly arrange a check presentation with HSK (if scheduling permits)
What HSK Cannot Do to Help You
- extend our tax exemption to you
- provide funding or reimbursement for expenses
- solicit sponsorship revenue for your fundraiser
- provide mailing lists of donors, physicians, volunteers or vendors
