FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEHOUSE CANCER AWARENESS WORKING GROUP TO HOLD HEARING ON CHILDHOOD CANCER
Washington, D.C., September 13, 2000 — U.S. Representative Deborah Pryce (R-OH) and the House Cancer Awareness Working Group will hold a hearing on childhood cancer on Friday, September 15 in 1310 Longworth House Office Building in recognition of Childhood Cancer Month. The hearing will give families, patients, survivors, and others from throughout the United States an opportunity to share their experiences with childhood cancer and insights about how the health care system treats pediatric oncology patients.
"The purpose of this hearing is to raise awareness about the incidence and devastation of childhood cancer and to serve as a call to action for all of us, especially Members of Congress, to do what we can to aid individuals and families who are engaged in a hard-fought battle against childhood cancer," Pryce said.
"Cancer has touched many of us, but a lot of people may not realize that cancer also touches the most vulnerable in our society, our children," Pryce added.
Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease for children and adolescents. This year, an estimated 12,400 children will be diagnosed with cancer and 2,300 will die from it. Each school day 46 children, or two classrooms of kids, will be diagnosed with cancer.
