FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEHOPE STREET KIDS TEAMS UP WITH CURESEARCH FOR THE MLB'S "COMMISSIONER'S INITIATIVE FOR KIDS"
Congresswoman Pryce, founder of HSK to throw out first pitch at Sunday's Cleveland Indians game in support of pediatric cancer research
Cleveland, Ohio, August 14, 2005 — Hope Street Kids, a pediatric cancer foundation founded by Congresswoman Deborah Pryce and Randy Walker, joined hundreds of childhood cancer patients and their families at Sunday's Cleveland Indians game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Jacobs Field, as part of the Major League Baseball's "Commissioner's Initiative for Kids Program."
The "Commissioner's Initiative for Kids" is an effort to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to provide tickets to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a Major League Baseball game. Ameriquest Mortgage Company has generously donated $1,000,000 toward this initiative. All proceeds from the program will support funding for CureSearch, a childhood cancer research foundation, as well as The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Official Charity of Major League Baseball.
U.S. Representative Deborah Pryce (Ohio), founder of Hope Street Kids was asked to throw out the first pitch at Sunday's Indians game by CureSearch for her cancer-related work in Congress and for Hope Street Kids, the pediatric cancer foundation she founded in memory of her nine-year-old daughter, Caroline Pryce Walker. The pre-game ceremony also featured a Hope Street Kid from the Columbus community who joined the team in the starting-line up.
Children associated with Youth Groups or local and national pediatric cancer organizations will be admitted to the game for $1, and all children fourteen and under will be invited to run the bases following the game.
Hope Street Kids mission is to eliminate childhood cancer through cutting-edge research, advocacy and education. The organization was founded by Congresswoman Pryce and Randy Walker in memory of their nine-year-old daughter, Caroline Pryce Walker, who lost a valiant battle against Neuroblastoma on September 4, 1999.
Since its inception, Hope Street Kids has raised more than $5 million to support its battle to eliminate childhood cancer, and provided more than $3.8 million in grants and fellowships to researchers that support investigations of promising treatment and prevention approaches to pediatric cancer.
